Agate Beach Before After

Hav and I recently took a 3-day mini trip up north to Humbolt and I took a ton of photos (which I will be posting soon). I wanted to share with you a before/after shot from Agate Beach - it was a really overcast and drizzly day, the sun would brighten up the clouds then completely disappear. It's amazing how different an image looks on my computer versus viewing it on the back of the camera display, what I thought to be a bright, crisp, realistic image was really dull, gray and boring. ...But not for long! After a bit of tweaking, I was able to bring back the subtle color of the sand, the density and fluffiness of the clouds, and the overall mood of such a foggy overcast day. That happens to me too, especially on bright sunny days. It is really nice to get a chance to “re-shape” the photo back to what I saw in my mind’s eye. You did a lovely job.

You can adjust the back LCD display’s brightness setting to more accurately match what the RAW image actually looks like. It sounds like you’ve got the brightness too high, or have the display set to “auto” in your menu (are you shooting with the 5DII?). Having the display’s brightness set to “auto” will especially mess one up as it will constantly change the display brightness depending on the ambient light conditions. Checking the histograms will give you a more accurate sense of whether your image is exposed properly.
